Fiber Type Composition in Semitendinous Muscle of Wistar Rats and Effects of Intermittent Training on its Hypertrophy International Journal of Morphology
Ferreira,Alexandre; Campos,Gerson Eduardo Rocha.
Skeletal muscles respond to several stimuli changing their phenotype. Muscular fibers adaptation capability is related to the presence of several myosin heavy chains (MHC). These express four types of pure fibers: I, IIA, IID and IIB containing MHCI, IIa, IId and IIb, respectively. Among pure fibers, there are hybrid fibers, which can express two or more types of myosins. In this study, types of fibers constituting male Wistar rats semitendinous and their myosin heavy chains, as well as influence of intermittent training on hypertrophy of these fibers have been checked through MATPase histochemical technique and electrophoretic proteins separation. All types of pure and hybrid muscular fiber have been found, however the fibers of the types IIA, IID and IIB...

HIGH RESOLUTION SEM OF INTRINSIC MUSCLE FIBERS OF ANTERIOR THIRD RET'S TONGUE International Journal of Morphology
Motoyama,Aracy A.; Watanabe,Ii-sei; Ogawa,Koichi.
The characteristics of intrinsic muscle fibers in the anterior third of the adult rat tongue were studied employing light microscopy, SEM and high-resolution SEM (HRSEM) methods. For light microscopy, specimens were fixed in Bouin's solution and embedded in paraffin. In order to identify the muscle fibers and bundles of collagen fibers, frontal sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin, azo-carmin and picro-sirius. The results showed that muscle fibers near the lamina propria are fixed with connective tissue, constituting several groups. The bundles of muscle fibers are arranged in longitudinal, vertical and transversal directions. For SEM, specimens were fixed in modified Karnovsky solution and freeze-fractured in liquid nitrogen revealed the collagen...

The current study aimed to analyze the histochemical and morphological characteristics of the levator ani muscle in rats. For this, we used 10 Wistar rats (5 males and 5 females), weighing between 200 and 765g. The animals were dissected fresh and in formalin for the levator ani muscle anatomical observation. Muscle fragments were collected and frozen in n-Hexane previously cooled in liquid nitrogen. Then, the muscles were transferred to a microtome cryostat (HM 505 E Microm), being fixed in metal mounts with the adhesive Tissue Freezing Medium. Histological sections of 6.0µm were removed and subjected to HE staining. Other sections were subjected to NADH-TR and SDH reactions. After being dissected and fixed, the architecture of the female pelvic floor...

Influence of Reduced Salinity on the Histochemical Fiber Type Composition of the Claw Closer Muscle of Two Estuarine Crab Species, Cyrtograpsus angulatus and Neohelice granulata (Decapoda: Varunidae) International Journal of Morphology
Longo,María Victoria; Díaz,Alcira Ofelia.
The estuarine crustaceans are exposed to frequent and abrupt environmental salinity changes that involve adjustments at different levels in muscle tissue. The histochemical composition of fiber types of the claw closer muscle of Cyrtograpsus angulatus and Neohelice granulata (Dana, 1851) under hyper regulatory conditions was analyzed. Cryosections of the muscle were treated with myosin-adenosine triphosphatase (m-ATPase), succinic dehydrogenase (SDH), periodic acid Schiff (PAS) and Sudan Black B. The mean diameters, the relative area and the proportion of each muscle fiber type were calculated. Types I and IV would belong to 'extreme' groups, whereas types II and III would be considered 'intermediate'. Type I fibers were large and exhibited a weak reaction...

MORPHOLOGICAL ALTERATIONS IN THE MASSETER MUSCLE INDUCED BY UNILATERAL EXTRACTION OF THE UPPER MOLARS IN GUINEA PIGS (Cavia porcellus) International Journal of Morphology
Mardegan Issa,João Paulo; Mizusaki Iyomasa,Mamie; Ioshie Mizusaki,Cristina; Watanabe,Ii-sei; Mandarim de Lacerda,Carlos Alberto.
The objective of the present study was to analyze morphological aspects of the structures of the stomatognathic system and their relationship with malocclusion. For this purpose, we determined the morphological alterations that occur in the masseter muscle of guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) after the induction of malocclusion by extraction of the left upper molars. Animals were divided into two groups (malocclusion and control group) and submitted to macroscopic, biometric and light microscopic analyses. The results showed a reduction in the width of the masseter muscle mainly in left side in the malocclusion group 60 days after unilateral extraction. Microscopically, round and polygonal muscle fibers of several diameters were observed, and altered muscle...

Muscular Partitioning in the Semitendinosus Muscle of the Pig International Journal of Morphology
Graziotti,Guillermo H; Ríos,Clara M; Rodríguez Menéndez,José M; Salinas,Matías A; Bosco,Alexis; Paltenghi Ceschel,Alejandra; Affricano,Néstor O; Victorica,Carlos L.
Neuromuscular compartments are subvolumens supplied by a primary nerve branch with homogeneous fiber characteristics. This muscular organization is important for understanding the muscle function in relation to postural and dynamic implications and also is relevant for appraising meat quality. Current researches associate fiber muscle characteristics with perimortem processes that regulate muscle transformation into meat. It is known that pig muscle has four heavy chain myosin isoforms: I, IIa, IIx and IIb. Castrated male pigs were slaughtered at 100 kg live weight. Semitendinosus muscle samples of each subvolumen determined previously (R1, R2, R3, R4) were frozen in liquid nitrogen and reacted for myofibrillar ATPase and NADH-TR for determining fiber...
